Portraits of Black Women I Have Yet to Name

From Artist Statement: "In my portraits of black women I also explore the multiform self through an array of characters and emotions. In particular, I depict African American women in their many guises—their exuberance and sensuality, their confidence and vulnerability."

Portraits of black women is a special art form within the African American art community, with its roots firmly embedded into Black cultural expression. Artist who specialize in this medium seek to exemplify Black pride, unity, culture, and a stronger sense of community. The most familiar female-centric Black artworks that focus on the beautiful black woman often highlight the vital roles and responsibilities she has traditionally owned within her family.

As of late, artists like the Monarq go even further, capturing portraits of black women outside of traditional family roles, and focusing instead on their comprehensive impact within the larger world. This is an understandable shift given that Black artists want their subjects to be seen, not as figureheads or tropes, but as everyday people. This move towards showing the real black woman, beyond the mom or wife, and demonstrating their impact outside the home, is a wonderful catalyst for conversation and cultural enlightenment.
